HD Photo (originally introduced as Windows Media Photo) is a still-image compression algorithm and file format for continuous tone photographic images. Developed by Microsoft as a part of the Windows Media family, it is the preferred image format for Microsoft's XPS documents. Official managed code (code that executes under management of a virtual machine) implementation is available as part of .NET Framework 3.0, and unmanaged code (code that is executed by the computer’s CPU) implementation is available as part of the Windows Imaging Component. Both components are part of Windows Vista and are available for Windows XP.
HD Photo has been announced by Microsoft and the Joint Photographic Experts Group to be under consideration for a JPEG standard, tentatively titled JPEG XR.
QualityLogic’s HD Photo Functional Test Suite provides a set of HD Photo files that exercise each of the HD Photo container and bitstream syntax elements that influence the behavior of an HD Photo decoder. The FTS includes over 500 HD Photo test images implemented across 65 test cases, including tests for each of the HD Photo container tags. These tests can be modified via the WIC interface and with the WMPEncApp encoder utility. Taken as a set, the test cases in this suite provide broad coverage of the diversity of HD Photo structure permutations likely to be generated by encoders.
