HP Printer Control Language (PCL) and PCL XL

Hewlett-Packard created the PCL printer language (simply referred to as “PCL” in the industry) to provide an economical and efficient way for application programs to control a range of printer features across a number of printing devices. PCL 5 was first released in 1990 on the LaserJet III series printers and added HP-GL/2 to enhance its desktop publishing capabilities.

HP released an object oriented version of PCL in the mid-1990’s - PCL XL which was optimized for printing from GUI interfaces such as Windows and compressed to optimize throughput.

These two printer languages are found on virtually every business printer sold today. Save time and money in the long term by ensuring that the printer models you choose for volume purchases now adhere to the standard and interoperate with other software and devices on your networks.
